This novel has an interesting twist on the vampire genre. These vampires are 11th century knights that were part of a Catholic sect that was wiped out by the church for heresy. They believe in reincarnation and have been searching for the reborn souls of their comrades so they can make them vampires and rebuild their religion.
Olivier is one of these reincarnated knights. He meets Sophie online and is convinced that she is his true love from a thousand years ago. He turns her into a vampire after she supposedly trips and breaks her neck. She always thought it would be cool to be a vampire and doesn’t really feel guilty for ripping the throat out of the first cabbie she meets.
She turns her roomate into a vampire too which isn’t much of a change for Norah because she was already a blood sucking (now murderous) bitch. Imagine turning to your best friend and asking, “Do you want to be a vampire or not? I think this shit might suck by myself.”
They get to do all kinds of fun stuff like getting revenge on Norah’s work rival and going on a shopping spree using their new powers of persuasion. There are definite moments of comedy and absurdity to offset the heavier themes of the book like the possible end of the world. A faery dubbed “The King of Death” apparently has a vendetta against Sophie for her part in imprisoning him during the 11th century and he’s been waiting for his chance to take revenge. She has to try and defeat the faery with the help of her vampire friends and her old lover or the whole world is doomed.
The historical aspects of the novel are sort of hard to follow unless you were a history major. There’s also some pretty kinky-weird vampire sex scenes between Olivier and Sophie.
