The Eternal Highlander is a co-written novel. There are two stories: Nightrider by Howell and The Highland Bride written by Sands. Cathal MacNachton and Connal MacAddie are Scottish highland Lairds who share a bond of blood in more ways than one. They both head clans of vampires. The year is 1474 and differences such as theirs are looked upon with fear and suspicion by outsiders.

The MacNachton and MacAddie clans have learned to adapt to their environments. They no longer feed on humans and have had some success intermarrying with outsiders. As a result some of the clan members can stand the sun. Cathal has convinced his cousin that outsider brides can help insure the survival of the clan by bringing in new blood to their line.

In Nightrider, Cathal is worried about telling his secret to Bridget Callan, but little does he know that his new bride has a few secrets of her own. In Highland Bride, Connal rescues Eva Caxton from desperate circumstances; she is about to be shipped off to a nunnery by her callous brother. Petite little Eva is clumsy and stubborn, but she may be Connal’s greatest ally in the fight for the future of the clan.

Some of the story elements are a bit absurd and the dialouge is challenging at times. There is a fine line between giving the reader the impression of a Scottish accent and phonetically spelling out each and every word. The authors at times stray a little too far over that line. If you enjoy books about Scotland I would also suggest Karen Marie Moning’s highlander novels.
