Realm of Shadows is the fourth novel in Shannon Drake’s vampire series. American Tara Adair travels to France to visit her ill grandfather. When she arrives, she finds him obsessed with an archeological dig of a nearby crypt. Her grandfather is a member of the Alliance, a secret group that is dedicated to protecting the world from evil. He knows that there is something that should not be awakened in this crypt and convinces Tara to look into it for him.
Tara is inside the crypt when the ancient evil is unleashed and has to flee for her life. She is afraid of the creature that was dug up and afraid of Brent, the powerful mysterious man who helped her escape. This story is loosely tied to the previous books in the series and some of the characters introduced in those make an appearance. The relationship between Tara and Brent never seems to develop and the changing perspectives make reading this book confusing. Realm of Shadows isn’t quite at the same level as Drake’s previous novels.
