I was not the biggest fan of J.R. Ward’s last book Dark Lover, but I loved this book. Lover Eternal was incredible and even though it was a lengthy 400 pages I wanted it to keep going. The vampires of the Brotherhood are deeper and more complex than they first appeared. Lover Eternal is about the warrior vampire Rhage. Rhage was cursed with a beast long ago by the Scribe Virgin. Whenever he gets out of control, he transforms into a dragon that will annihilate anything around it even to the point of being dangerous to his brothers. To keep his beast under control he sates his appetites with fighting and women.

Mary Luce accidentally becomes involved in the vampire world when she tries to help a mute teenage boy. The Brotherhood is interested in this boy because he appears to have the mark of a warrior. Rhage becomes Mary’s protector when the dangerous forces of the Lessers zero in on her. These evil, soulless beings are now hunting civilians in their quest to destroy the Brotherhood. Rhage is drawn to Mary’s calming voice and her steel gray warrior eyes. Her softness and strength soothe the savage beast within him but she also has a curse of her own. Rhage’s intense attraction towards her threatens to unearth feelings that she doesn’t want or need. She lost her faith long ago, but will she fight to regain it to experience a love that could transform them both?

I’m *completely* hooked on this series now. Rhage seemed like just a playboy who liked to bang the babes but he has hidden depths of pain and despair that really draw out his humanity. Mary also isn’t the average heroine of the romance novel. She has also experienced pain and tragedy in her life. Mary isn’t stunningly beautiful and she is scarred in more ways than one. These characters tap into the human desire to be seen and understood as we are and will be irresistible to readers. I can’t wait for the next book Lover Awakened about Zsadist; the darkest, most broken warrior of them all.
