Past Redemption is The Darkwings Chronicles’ book two. Vampire Daphne Urban and her fellow vampires on Team Darkwing have a new mission. A dangerous drug called sustu is invading Manhattan. It’s victims die horribly choking and turning blue. According to their government handler J, the drug is linked to some very important people with connections to the President. Since it’s a matter of national security the Darkwings are called in. They must find out where the drug is coming from and stop it before thousand die the same gruesome death and national secrets are revealed to enemies. The Darkwings will have to infiltrate the NYC club scene to find out how sustu is being distributed. Broken-hearted over her ex-lover Darius della Chiesa, Daphne connects with St. Julian Fitzmaurice at an Irish pub. Her casual flirtation with “Fitz” develops into something more and she finds out he’s connected to the drug. But before too long the dangerous and sexy Darius is back and Daphne will have to untangle her feelings about him to determine if he is back to help them or to destroy her.
The Darkwings are a comic-book-like team of undead super heroes swooping in to save the day. Daphne is always in the right place at the right time to gather important information and clues. Oh yeah, her mother is behind the scenes orchestrating everything. If mom is so powerful why doesn’t she just take care of things herself? My guess is that she’s trying to give her daughter some kind of purpose in her undead life. The romantic relationships between the characters is also a bit frustrating. Daphne is a 500 year old vampire but it’s nice to know she has the same kind of men problems that human women have. She can’t resist Darius and the push-pull between these two is enough to drive anyone crazy. It could all be true though right? Giant bats working as undercover spies for the federal government? Who knows?
