Paen Scott is a Dark One. He was born without a soul and only finding his Beloved will regain it for him. Paen’s father and mother were not yet “joined” when he was born resulting in his soulless state. Paen is a dark, broody, Scot that you could just eat up with a spoon. He’s not interested in the parade of women that his randy brothers bring home for him. All he wants to do is focus on his research attempting to find an ancient manuscript that details the history of his people. If he can find it he may discover how to get his soul back without entangling himself in an unwanted relationship. Paen is also running the estate while his parents are in South America. He’s got lots of stuff on his hands when a demon pops up to inform him of a debt that must be paid. His father apparently made a deal with a demon lord and now payment has come due. In 5 days Paen must find a monkey statue known as the Jiln God otherwise his mother’s soul will be forfeit to the demon.

Paen needs help and fast, luckily his brother knows of a diviner who may be able to help them. Half-elf Samantha Cosse was kicked out of the Order of Diviners but that hasn’t stopped her from opening her own business. She is after all, really good at finding stuff. Paen is one of her first paying clients and he sets more than just her elf senses tingling. Paen is just as attracted to Sam and he thinks he can help her with a problem of her own. Whenever she is aroused, she astrally projects against her will, leaving her body and missing out on all the fun parts. Sam is convinced that she is Paen’s beloved and she’s going to help with get his soul back and save his mother. Even Vampires Get the Blues is great fun and very similar to Katie MacAlister’s previous Dark One books. She always has humorous, quirky characters who are imperfect and as flawed as the rest of us. The one exception is Sam’s ridiculous cousin who is in denial about being a faery. I just wanted to smack her and tell her to get a clue. Paen is her standard hunky euopean vampire who is too delicious to be true, but we can all dream right?
