Lanie Webber’s father has died and she must travel to the darkest part of the Amazon jungle to indentify his body. Lanie’s father was a crypto zoologist studying animals that are thought to be myth like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness monster. His most recent research had taken him to South America where he believed he had found El Chupacabra. The chupacabra or “goat sucker” is an animal that lives off of the blood of livestock but has reportedly attacked humans.

Lanie hires veteran pilot Mac Knight to get her to the Amazon quickly. There’s something about the dark, dangerous man that makes her wary and strangely attracted at the same time. Mac is a former Navy SEAL and has his own reasons for wanting to go to the secret government compound where Lanie’s father worked. When they arrive at the research lab they find five dead bodies and a strange gargoyle-like creature formerly thought to exist only in legend. Mac and Lanie are thrust into a life or death situation when Mac is attacked and bitten. Lanie manages to save him but Mac is now changing in ways that neither of them ever expected. The other men who were bitten by the chupacabra have become vampires. Mac, however did not die like the others and come back to life. Lanie is hot for Mac but will he become one of the evil undead? Someone from Mac’s past is behind the attacks and the death of Lanie’s father but will they survive long enough to find out who it is and why?

Popp writes a very unique entre into the vampire genre. Out of the Night begins a fascinating new vampire series mixing mythology, government agencies, and a secret vampire hunting family. The story is fast paced, exciting and definitely not the same old fang ‘em and bang ‘em. The second novel in the Night Slayer series is Seduced by the Night.
