Anita is afraid she might be pregnant and worse, she doesn’t know who the father is. Vampire, leopard, or werewolf? Not to mention Anita’s jobs as vampire executioner and zombie raiser aren’t exactly conducive to raising a child. How will all the potential fathers react to the news that they might be a daddy? Anita has faced some pretty tough situations but this one’s about to top them all. And her best friend Ronnie, rather than being supportive is being a jealous bitch.
If that’s not stressful enough, Jean Claude is planning a big party for the traveling vampire ballet, Danse Macabre. Lots of important (and scary) guests are coming to town for more than just the ballet. Rumors have spread about the growing power of the triumvirate. Jean Claude has invited several of the master’s of the city to bring Anita a pomme de sang candidate. Anita must choose a new pomme to replace Nathaniel now that he is part of her new triumvirate with the vampire Damian. She gets to sample all the goods if she so chooses but casual sex is a bit icky for Anita. You wouldn’t think that sleeping with six men would be difficult but just imagine what it would be like trying to keep all those guys from getting jealous.
Speaking of jealous, Richard has very strong feelings about this whole thing and he’s not afraid to share them. Richard isn’t my favorite guy but I found myself identifying with him. It’s got to be hard watching the woman you love change so dramatically and have to feed off other men through sex. I found myself missing the old Anita who was out there solving cases with RPIT, slaying vamps, and raising zombies. Just as I was having all these sad feelings, Hamilton throws in this really intense scene that lets the reader know exactly how Anita feels about all this too.
There are a lot of great elements to Danse Macabre. I love that even as her life is spinning out of control, Anita still hasn’t lost her wicked sense of humor. Anita’s trademark in-depth analysis of just about every decision she makes also gives you exactly what is going on in her head. Granted there is a lot of sex in the book, similar to Incubus Dreams, but there’s always a purpose for it. Every time something happens it has emotional ramifications for Anita and the men in her life. Hamilton also brings in some new shape shifters including the lions and merpeople who are seriously freaky. Speaking of freaky, Marmi Noir makes another startling appearance. Marmi Noir, aka mother of darkness, aka the first vampire is one scary beast and her interest in Anita can’t be good. Even though it was missing some of the elements that I wanted to see I really liked Danse Macabre. I can’t wait to see where Hamilton will take things next.
