Ravyn Kontis is a Dark-Hunter who used to be a Were-Hunter. Rayvn was an Arcadian, meaning his form is human but he has the ability to shape shift into an animal, his animal happens to be a leopard. Rayvn made the mistake of trusting a human woman who exposed his people’s secrets. As a result of her betrayal most of his village was slaughtered. Rayvn was killed by his brother Phoenix for causing it. Now he is a hunter of the soul sucking daimons and he never allows anyone to get too close for fear they will either leave him or betray him.
Susan Michaels was once a respected journalist. She lost everything when she was set up by a fake source including her reputation, her home, and her lover. Susan is working at the bottom of the journalistic food chain: the supermarket tabloid. Alien babies and bat boys aren’t exactly her dream stories but they keep food on the table and the legal bills paid. That is until she gets a tip from a friend at an animal shelter that just might pan out to be her biggest story yet and maybe resurrect her dead career.
The hot news tip turns out to be about vampires taking over Seattle, so much for reviving the career. On top of that Susan gets talked into adopting a cat (which she is allergic to). The “cat” is really an immortal shape shifting vampire hunter. Talk about a bad mental health day. Susan is convinced she’s crazy but she can’t resist taking a peek at the gorgeous naked Rayvn in her living room. Not only is the vampire story real, but the citizens of Seattle are in danger of losing their lives and their souls. The last time Rayvn trusted a human woman people died (including himself). Can he trust the truth of his existence to a tabloid reporter? He’s attracted to Susan and her dark sense of humor, but will it be enough to overcome his wariness about past betrayal?
This story is a bit different from the usual Dark-Hunter fare. Rayvn’s dual nature adds a new dimension to the story. I love that Susan is allergic to his “fur” and teases him about being a cat. I also like that Susan is not the typical weak female heroine. She can kick some daimon ass on her own and doesn’t need Rayvn to save her. The previous Dark-Hunter novels have been set in New Orleans, but with the destruction of the city by hurricane Katrina it makes sense to have a new location (at least temporarily). Kenyon drops more hints about Acheron’s true nature and brings Nick Gautier back into the story. The book doesn’t exactly end, it’s more of a “to be continued…”. There are some major twists in the book and the ending was very shocking. The future of the Dark-Hunters looks pretty scary.

I loved this book! I have to admit that her Were-Hunters are my favorites, but Susan is the best heroine ever. I howled when I found out that she learned her blade skills in the SCA and her fighting skills from another Dark Hunter. I found the book surprising, intriguing and it left me wanting more. Kenyon can’t write fast enought to suit me.

Sherrilyn Kenyon is one of the best writers of our time. She has created a world unparallelled. I love that she isn’t afraid to let her characters’ mistakes affect the stories. This book was full of surprising twists and turns and does a wonderful job of connecting the dark-hunter and were-hunter worlds. One of the best in the series! She just can’t get them out fast enough!
