Rachel Morgan’s adventures are always entertaining and amusing. In Every Which Way But Dead Rachel formed a werewolf pack with her friend David to get good insurance rates. Now she’s having to deal with some unexpected consequences of that action; including werewolf dominance challenges. Not so easy when you can’t change into a wolf yourself.

Rachel and the vampire Kisten are also dating. She finally has a gorgeous, caring boyfriend to replace that cad Nick who dumped her and left town. Nick has been up to no good and gotten Jenk’s son Jax involved as well. He’s stolen an artifact of great power from a pack of werewolves and they’re willing to do anything, even kill to get it back. Rachel and Jenks go to Mackinaw, Michigan to rescue Jax but the only way for Jenks to survive the cold weather is to make him human sized. Jenk’s hunkiness grows in proportion to his size and he’s a yummy distraction for Rachel. Shortly after arriving in Mackinaw they become embroiled in a conflict between the werewolves and vampires. Nick has been captured by the local werewolf pack. Rachel has the power to save Nick but she will have to use dark and potent demon magic to do it. Is she willing to risk a stain on her soul for the guy who stomped all over her heart?

One thing that made me uncomfortable was the relationship between Ivy and Rachel. I get that Ivy really wants to bite her and that taking blood is closely intertwined with sex in her mind. What I don’t get is why she and the Kisten continue to pressure Rachel into letting it happen. I know Rachel loves her friend but we know she is not gay or bisexual. That’s what makes it so awkward. Any respectful person would give up trying to come on to their roommate once they found out the person was not interested. I don’t know why Rachel thinks that because she loves her friend that she has to give in to her. I can’t buy into it because it doesn’t make sense to me.

There are many things to like about this book. One of those things is Rachel’s courage and heart, she’s willing to put her life and soul on the line for the people that she loves. She’s also totally irrepressible; nothing gets her down for long. Jenks also gets a expanded role in this book. The life of a pixy is very short and Jenks is nearing the end of his life, adding a poignant, dark element to the story. The future of the Vampiric Charms trio is uncertain. The book is also long enough to develop a good story and Harrison always makes sure you get your money’s worth. With over 500 pages, A Fistful of Charms will keep you entertained for a long time. Overall, I think that A Fistful of Charms is another great addition to Harrison’s Hollows series. Her intense dark, urban fantasy puts her right up there with talented authors like Laurell Hamilton, Charlaine Harris and Kelley Armstrong.
