Undead and Unpopular is the fifth book in MaryJanice Davidson’s Undead series about Besty Taylor, Queen of the Vampires. MJD puts her wicked wit to use in this latest tale of Betsy’s troubles that include endless wedding plans, tangling with a zombie and dealing with eurotrash vampires who don’t want her for a queen. It’s also her birthday and the one-year anniversary of her undeath.
This book just felt like a week in the life of Betsy. She’s got more queen crap to deal with along with problems in her personal life. She glides through it with aplomb and her typical razor-sharp one-liners. The sad thing was I really wanted to love this book but I just couldn’t bring muster any enthusiasm for the story. There weren’t any laugh out loud moments for me as in the previous books. It was also quite short, but when you’re not wrapped up in the plot it’s kind of a relief to be done.
I really love MaryJanice Davidson’s writing but it didn’t seem like she was that into this book either. Maybe she’s pouring her energy into her new mermaid series. But whatever, I’m still a big fan and will continue to buy her books. Hopefully she’ll be able to breathe new life into this series because it really needs it. Betsy is such a great character and there’s plenty more story here to tell.
