Seduced by the Night is the second book in Robin T. Popp’s Night Slayer series. Dirk Adams is a changeling; part vampire and part human. His strength and skills make him the ultimate fighter in the struggle against vampires in Washington, DC. Dirk works for Admiral Winslow, the retired officer introduced in Out of the Night. Dirk works with Mac Knight, another changeling as they try to track down the vampires the police have dubbed “the exsanguinators”.

Dr. Bethany Stavinoski is the top researcher in her field of biochemistry and her skills have brought her to the attention of some very dangerous people. She’s on a new project and arrives at work to find her lab trashed and experiments destroyed. A series of terrifying attacks brings her into contact with Dirk Adams. The police have brought in Dirk and Mac to help investigate since there seems to be a link between the attacks on Bethany and the exsanguinator attacks. Dirk is only too happy to serve as Bethany’s bodyguard. The attraction heightens between the two as the danger increases. The vampires soon make it clear exactly what they want from Bethany. She will have to trust Dirk for both of them to survive but their passions could override their common sense. There’s also the small matter of Beth’s fiance’ and boss, Miles Van Horne. Miles is up to something and he needs Beth for his plans to succeed.

The chupacabra angle on the origin of these vampires remains interesting. The distracting story line about the baby chupa wasn’t so much. Also I didn’t really understand Beth and Miles’ relationship and why the heck she got engaged to him. It just seemed like she was too lazy to go out and date and she said yes to the first person who asked her to marry him. I also thought Dirk was kind of a jerk to her in one scene. He had no reason not to trust her and she had never lied but he all of a sudden decided that she was a lying slut? The first book was much more interesting than this one. The Night Slayer series continues with Tempted in the Night and homicide detective John Boehler. Tempted will be released in early 2007.
