Primal Heat is the fifth book in Susan Sizemore’s Primes Series. Phillipa Elliot is the sister of Jo Elliot from the second book I Thirst for You. At Jo’s wedding to Marcus, Phillipa has a brief, intense encounter with best man Mathias Bridger. Mathias is a Family Prime like his cousin Marcus and a sexy alpha male to boot. Phillipa hasn’t been able to forget about the gorgeous Brit in the three years since the wedding. One taste of Phillipa had Mathias running far away; the last thing he wanted was to bond with a mortal woman. As a tracker (police of the vampires) his job is to track down the bad guys and bring them to justice. His job would endanger anyone that he cares about.

Phillipa doesn’t know that her sister married a vampire. She just knows there is something very weird about this family and their traditions. She agrees to be her new nephew’s guardian and as luck would have it, Mathias Bridger is going to be the child’s vampire guardian. The powerful draw they feel to each other hasn’t waned in the three years apart. Phillipa however is not the same person she was before. Her career as a cop has abruptly ended when she was shot on the job. Her injury brought to light the devastating disease she didn’t know she had. Now her life is ruled by drugs, doctors and constant blood tests. Mathias makes her forget for a while the pain and depression of her new life. Even if it’s only for a brief affair, she will take what she can get because she can’t resist his touch.

Mathias knows he should stay away from Phillipa. He doesn’t want a bondmate and just being with her could endanger her life. His plans to leave go awry when he finds out his friend and fellow tracker Mike is in town. Mike has the same role as Mathias except for the werewolves. There is a werewolf serial killer on the loose in Las Vegas and he may have help from a vampire making it Mathias’s case as well. The danger ratchets up another notch when a band of Purist vampire hunters attack Phillipa, Jo and the baby. Mathias will have to hunt down the rouge vampire and take care of the hunters. Former cop Phillipa isn’t going to sit on the sidelines for this one. Knowing the full story about her sister’s family and Mathias just makes her more determined to eliminate the threat against those she loves. Can Mathias push Phillipa away to ensure her safety or are they destined to be together?

Phillipa is a great character because she’s flawed and imperfect. Most heroines aren’t battling a disease while still kicking some ass. She’s also not afraid to take chances and throw herself into an affair with no regrets. Mathias however seems a bit one dimensional. More background on Mathias would have really rounded out the story well. Primal Heat is a sexy, fast-paced read that will leave you wanting more.
