New Moon is the highly anticipated second book in Stephenie Meyer’s series about Isabella Swan and Edward Cullen. It began with Twilight (click here to read the review) and the story of the star-crossed lovers continues in Bella’s senior year of high school. The book begins with Bella’s 18th birthday. It’s troubling for her because she is now “older” than her true love Edward who became a vampire when he was just 17. Even if she joins him in immortality, she will always be physically older than Edward. Bella desperately wants to be like Edward but he is afraid that she will lose her soul if he makes her like the rest of the Cullens. A shocking incident at her birthday party brings her fragility to the forefront of Edward’s mind. He comes to the decision that the only way to keep Bella safe and for her to have a life normal is for him to leave. One day after school he tells Bella that they are leaving in a scene that is heartbreakingly brutal. He tells Bella that he doesn’t want her plummeting her into a pit of numb despair.

Cruelest of all is that Edward erased all traces of himself from Bella’s life leaving her to wonder if the Cullens every really existed at all. Months pass with Bella sleepwalking through her life. She goes to school, cooks and cleans, but can’t bring herself to connect with her friends or her father Charlie. Charlie becomes more and more concerned about the zombie that his daughter has become. He’s disturbed that she may never get over the loss of Edward.

Before Edward left he made Bella promise not do anything reckless or stupid. After he is gone, Bella begins to hear Edward’s voice in her head, specifically when she is about to do something dangerous. She decides that since he broke his promise to never leave her she will break hers as well. Fate provides an opportunity to do just that when she sees a sign in the Marks’s yard about some used motorcycles. Bella decides to ask her friend Jacob Black to fix them up for her and teach her to ride in exchange for one of the bikes. Bella begins driving up to La Push nearly everyday to hang out with Jacob while he works on them. The friendship between Bella and Jacob that began over a year ago during a walk on the beach becomes her life preserver. Being with Jacob is the only time that she is able to push away the pain of her loss. Jacob’s feelings run much deeper but he is willing to take what he can get from Bella. He knows she is broken and damaged but he still wants her. Bella’s not sure if she could every really love Jacob like he deserves. She knows that she will never love anyone else like she loved Edward but should she try to move on?
