New Moon Review continued…. (click here to go back to part 1)

Bella’s reckless stunts with riding the motorcycle keep Edward talking in her head and make her feel alive for at least a few exhilarating moments. Her next challenge is to try cliff diving. Jacob promised to take her when they see some of the guys from the reservation doing it. This group of young men has a secret in which Jacob becomes ensnared. Hikers have been going missing and there have been several reports of bear sightings. Bella gets her own glimpse of the “bears” up close when she encounters the vampire Laurent out in the woods. The “bears” are actually massive wolves that chase Laurent away and save Bella from a violent death.

Quileute legends about the “cold ones” and their enemy, men that become wolves to guard humans, begin to come to life. Jacob is now one of these guardians, a werewolf. His sunny, happy self morphs into a bitter, angry young man who can’t deal with what he has become. He blames the Cullens for triggering the change and feels nothing but hate for the man who holds Bella’s heart. The vampire Victoria comes looking for Bella and the only thing standing in her way are the werewolves. Danger surrounds Bella and she becomes fearful for her father’s safety. In a moment of despair she decides to cliff dive, setting into motion a chain of events that could end with Edward’s death and ultimately her own.

I’ll leave the end a secret because it’s way too good to tell all here. New Moon is absolutely incredible and if possible it’s better that Twilight which was pretty great. This is the kind of story that is so involving that you just don’t want to stop reading. Even after putting it down I find myself still thinking about these characters and mulling over the story in my mind. Stephenie Meyer writes emotion in a way that makes you truly feel what the characters feel and to care about them. The quality of her writing has inspired a well-deserved intense devotion from her fans. If you don’t believe me just check out the comments under the Twilight review or visit one of her fan sites like Twilight Lexicon. New Moon is absolutely, definitely, a must read. It is published as a Young Adult book so you may have to check out the teen section of the bookstore to find it. Or, even better simply order it by clicking on the Amazon.com link above. The next book in the series will be Eclipse releasing in the fall of 2007.
