Review by Vicky London

Stake That is the second book in Mari Mancusi’s Boys That Bite series. Rayne MacDonald is a goth girl who really wants to be a vampire. Unfortunately Magnus, the vampire that was chosen for her, accidentally bit her twin Sunshine instead. Now she has to go to the back of the line for another chance at a vampire mate.

The irony is that Rayne has been chosen to be the next vampire slayer of her generation, complete with a geeky teacher to guide her in her mission (a la Buffy). Her first job is to find out who is spreading a disease among the vampires and stop the rouge vamp from trying to take out Magnus who is also the coven leader. Rayne’s sidekick on the mission is the gorgeous and broody vampire Jareth. High school sucks but maybe being the slayer isn’t so bad after all if it means a partner that looks like Jude Law.

Stake That is written in a blog format which makes it feel like you’re one of Rayne’s friends reading her thoughts. To mix things up she also throws in some chat transcripts. The two combine to make a fun and modern new way of telling the story. Rayne is charming, witty, and snarky as hell when she wants to be. She has a hard exterior but is all soft and gooey on the inside. Stake That is a young adult book that will appeal to all ages. Even if you aren’t in high school anymore most of us can remember what it was like. I loved this book. Stake That is clever, interesting, and I’m definitely going to go out and get Boys That Bite.

This book will be released on December 5, 2006. The third book in the series Girls That Growl will follow in October 2007. You can click on the Amazon link above to order Stake That. For UK readers you can order the book in our Vampire Genre UK Shop.
