Review by Vicky London
Bit the Jackpot by Erin McCarthy continues the story of the Vegas vampires with Seamus Fox. Seamus is campaign manager for Ethan Carrick, the president of the vampire nation (from High Stakes). Seamus is suffering from 200 years of self-imposed celibacy and he’s ready for it to end when he meets stripper Cara Kim. Cara is working her way through veterinary school by working as an exotic dancer. She has goals and the last thing she needs is a sexy distraction like Seamus. Seamus doesn’t understand why his mind control isn’t working on her. He really wants her because Cara is the first woman to capture his attention in over 200 years.
A brutal attack in the parking lot of the strip club ends with Cara near death. Seamus has to make a decision to turn her or let her die. His choice could affect whether Ethan is re-elected as president, not to mention save the life of Cara. He decides to bite the bullet (or the stripper in this case) and turn her. Now, they’re stuck with each other until Cara learns how to live as a vampire. Cara is attracted to Seamus but she can’t handle being forced to give up her independence. She implements a plan of trying to annoy the crap out of Seamus so that he won’t want to live with her anymore. Needless to say the plan backfires.
In the meantime an old enemy and rival of Ethan’s, Donatelli, is bent on killing him and the hit man Ringo is still on the loose. Kelsey, the dimwitted secretary seems to be the only one who can find him and thwart his plans. The men head for the Venetian to confront Donatelli and their women may be the only way they can be saved from their own inane plans. Seamus finally comes to his senses to realize that he has fallen for one of the rarest things in Vegas, a good girl.
Bit the Jackpot is a comedic vampire romance that’s light and fluffy. The continuing stories of the characters make the story more interesting that it would otherwise be if it was a single novel. The relationship between Kelsey and the hit man Ringo is puzzling and you’ll have to stay tuned for future books to see how it plays out. The next book in the series is Bled Dry which will be released in May 2007. You can order Bit the Jackpot by clicking on the Amazon.com link above.
