Review by Vicky London

The Nymphos of Rocky Flats by Mario Acevedo is the story of Felix Gomez. Felix is a gulf war veteran who came back from Iraq with something more than he bargained for, he’s now a vampire. Back in the states, he has used his vampire skills to become a successful private detective known for solving impossible cases. Felix’s reputation gets him a call from an old acquaintance, Gilbert Odin. Gilbert works for the Department of Energy in Rocky Flats, Colorado.

Rocky Flats has suffered from an outbreak of nymphomania. The victims have been treated but Gilbert needs to know what caused the outbreak. Felix has a big job ahead of him and he’ll need all his vampire skills to succeed. If the stress of interviewing nymphos and dealing with bureaucracy isn’t enough, Felix must deal with the local vampire community and some crazed vampire hunters who want him really dead.

Nymphos borrows elements from the men’s adventure genre in this hard-boiled detective novel with a twist. This series provides a fresh, male perspective on the vampire novel all the while neatly skewering pop culture. Look for the next book in the series, X-Rated Bloodsuckers in March 2007.
