Review by Vicky London
The Last of the Red-Hot Vampires by Katie MacAlister is another foray in the world of the Dark Ones. Physicist Portia Harding is the queen of logic and reason. She believes that if there isn’t a scientific explanation for something, then it must not exist. Her best friend, who is into the paranormal, invites her on a trip to England hoping to turn this skeptic into a believer. During a visit to a fairy ring, Portia accidentally summons an otherworldly being who bestows upon her the ability to control weather.
While Portia is unknowingly brewing the storms overhead, a gorgeous maniac is trying to kidnap her. Theondre North is a nephilim (the son of an angel) who has been cast out of The Court. He needs Portia’s help to regain his rightful place. But first Portia will have to pass seven trials and overcome her unwillingness to believe what is happening right before her eyes. Portia manages to frustrate the hell out of everyone and get Theo turned into a vampire. All of these problems do come with an up side, she uncovers a passion with this Dark One that could ultimately save Theo’s soul.
The Last of the Red-Hot Vampires is signature Katie MacAlister, full of wit, humor and fantasy. You may want to strangle this endearing heroine early on but the payoff is worth the wait. This book is part of the Dark Ones series but can certainly be read as a stand alone. Fans of Katie’s Aisling Grey books will be interested to see an overlap of worlds with the cameo of the guardian Noelle. Visiting the world of the Dark Ones is always an adventure.
