Review by Vicky London
Touch the Dark is the first book in Karen Chance’s Cassie Palmer series. Cassandra Palmer can see the future and communicate with spirits-talents that make her attractive to the dead and the undead. The ghosts of the dead aren’t usually dangerous; they just like to talk…a lot. The undead are another matter.
Like any sensible girl, Cassie tries to avoid vampires. But when the bloodsucking Mafioso she escaped three years ago finds Cassie again with vengeance on his mind, she’s forced to turn to the vampire Senate for protection. The undead senators won’t help her for nothing, and Cassie finds herself working with one of their most powerful members, a dangerously seductive master vampire-and the price he demands may be more than Cassie is willing to pay. (-from Karen Chance.com)
Touch the Dark is more than just a vampire book. Cassie’s world is full of magic (including that which she can wield herself), not to mention the fairies, mages and demons. The time travel parts are particularly interesting along with her power as pythia to affect past events. Being raised by vampires, Cassie’s family “relationships” pretty much define dysfunction. She has also attracted the attention of the silver circle mages who are threatened by her growing skills. There are enemies all around and Cassie has to determine who to trust with her life. This is a dark, magical fantasy that will appeal just about any fan of the paranormal.

I would actually say that this book has more to do with magic and other supernatuals than vampires, even though they are a big part of the story line. At first I felt that she went into too much detail and it was a bit boring, when you get past that point (if you can) it’s a great series. The characters change and develop. There are also surprises!
