Review by Vicky London

For a Few Demons More is Kim Harrison’s fifth Hollows novel and it starts off with a bang. Newt, a very powerful demon, tries to possess Rachel and invades her church looking for something. How a demon could possibly appear during the day and invade hallowed ground? Personal problems take a backseat when Agent Glenn from the FIB wants Rachel’s help. Weres are turning up dead and the IS is trying to cover them up as suicides. The deaths are very suspicious and Rachel quickly comes to the conclusion that someone knows she still has a powerful were artifact that was supposed to be destroyed. Meanwhile, the powerful and devious Trent Kalamack wants Rachel to help provide security for his wedding. The last thing she wants to do is guard his body but the lure of cash is too much especially since she has a church to repair from the demon attack. The danger ratchets up when an old enemy is freed and Rachel will have to put her skills to the test to protect those she loves.

Kim Harrison is quite adept at world-building. Her alternate world where humans and “Inderlanders” live side by side and where witches, weres and vamps no longer hide is an intriguing place. The plot of each Hollows novel is always very complex. There are somethings that work and some that don’t in this one. One thing that doesn’t work is Rachel’s relationship with Ivy. Their relationship is just too dysfunctional for them to live together. Why can’t Ivy accept that Rachel is not a lesbian and move on? Why does Rachel keep trying to get Ivy to bite her? Rachel is obviously confused, sexually and otherwise so until she figures it out they need to stop torturing each other. What works: Rachel is growing up and she’s starting to analyze herself a bit more. She makes really rash decisions (sometimes brilliantly and sometimes with disastrous consequences) but at least she has others around her who can make her take a second look at herself and examine why she does what she does.

It looks like demons will be playing a bigger role in future books and Rachel’s world is changing in ways she never thought possible. Her ideas of good and evil are becoming more flexible in relation to herself and others. It seems that Trent will also be back in future books. He’s the bad guy you love to hate. Trent is a total dichotomy; he has very nice qualities and can be a good guy but he’s also a murderer and a drug dealer. Rachel is starting to see things about him she never considered. With all of the events of this book and the death of one of the characters, I think her protective bubble has finally burst and she’s seeing the world with new eyes. The series is becoming much darker and For a Few Demons More ends on a very tragic note. Harrison said in an interview with Media Blvd that this is really a two book story and that the next book will bring more answers.
