Review by Vicky London

Midnight Brunch is the second book by Marta Acosta starring Milagro de los Santos. Milagro has finally found love, family and a home at the ranch of her boyfriend Oswald Grant. The Grant family are vampires, caused by a rare genetic condition that leaves them craving blood and sensitive to sunlight. Milagro feels she has been accepted but is confused and hurt when she is excluded from a family gathering. She decides to spy and gets an eyeful of a strange and frightening ceremony.

The vampires are still keeping secrets and Milagro is determined to find out what they are. While Oswald takes off on a medical mission of mercy, she goes north for a friend’s wedding and the beginning of a dangerous adventure. A group of rogue vampires has special plans for Milagro and she escapes to the desert town of La Basura to hide out. Weird happenings are afoot in the town and they seem to be connected to the spa where she’s staying with a washed up actor, a flamboyant socialite and a tabloid reporter. The dastardly plan of the neo-vamps unfolds but this chica is going to turn the tables on them. As Milagro comes to grips with what she learns, the truth may finally lead her home.

Midnight Brunch is even better than Happy Hour at Casa Dracula. Milagro is one of those characters you wish was your friend. She’s smart, witty, funny and her life has never a dull moment. Milagro’s world is full of weirdness, including vampires, chupacabras, and naked actors but she just goes with the flow. This book is so fun and quirky, it will make you laugh, make you think, and make you sad when it’s over. Hopefully we’ll be treated to more adventures of Milagro de los Santos.
