Hunter’s Salvation is the sequel to the bestselling Hunting the Hunter by Shiloh Walker. Vax used to be a Hunter, tracking the evil creatures who prey on innocent humans. He retired long ago from that life but is feeling that pull again because someone, somewhere is in danger and he is one of the few that can help.
Jessica Warren is determined to get revenge on the men who murdered her sister. Like the other women in her family, Jessica is gifted. She is a telekinetic and psychic. She will do anything to destroy the monster who took away the last of her family, even if it means putting herself in mortal danger.
Jessica would rather do without Vax’s help, but the tall, dark and delicious stranger saves her life and she accepts that she’s up against something she can’t explain. Jess can’t resist the tortured bad boy vibe Vax throws off. There’s something irresistible about him and the feeling is mutual. The last thing Vax wants is to love someone new since his relationship ended tragically. Jess could be the woman of his dreams if he can manage to keep her alive. The danger escalates when they uncover her sister was killed by a vampire running an underground lab that performs cruel experiments on unsuspecting witches.
Hunter’s Salvation is a decent paranormal romance. Jess starts out as the stereotypical irrational heroine who doesn’t wan to be swayed by logic. She thinks she can get access to a powerful man and somehow exact revenge on him. How she might go about that isn’t really clear. Walker eventually shows that Jess definitely has a death wish. She doesn’t really care if she comes out of it alive which makes her more reckless and furious rather than clueless which to me is more forgivable. Vax is a complex character but his self-flagellation and moodiness gets old quickly. His tattoos and the role they play in the story of his life is a nice touch and adds an interesting dimension to him. I’d like to see what happens to this couple afterward which seems likely since Walker likes to bring back characters from previous hunter stories.
Hunter’s Salvation can be read as a stand alone book but will make more sense if read as part of the series. It’s a bit hard however to try and figure out exactly in what order to read the hunter stories. Some have been published by Ellora’s Cave and others by Berkley. Adding to the confusion, Hunters Heart and Soul was published between Hunting the Hunter and Hunter’s Salvation but Salvation is supposed to be the sequel to Hunting. Ehh, who knows. If you like stories with vampires, witches and weres and the hunters who police them you’ll enjoy this book.
