Review by Vicky London
Possession is book two in Jennifer Armintrout’s Blood Ties series. Carrie is finally adjusting to vampire life. Her former sire Cyrus is no longer a threat since she killed him and her new sire Nathan is her roommate and lover. Things are going great until Nathan is possessed by the Soul Eater and goes on a rampage. He is no longer himself as evidenced by a vicious attack on a human. Carrie has to find him and figure out a way to help him before the Voluntary Vampire Extinction Movement tracks him down and kills him.
Meanwhile, Cyrus has been raised from the dead by his father the Soul Eater and his pet witch. The only drawback it that he is now human. While his father continues with his plot to become a god, Cyrus is kept captive in a church basement by the Fangs, a vampire motorcycle gang. His companion in captivity is a young church employee that he calls “Mouse”. During the long excruciating days of his newfound humanity Cyrus discovers his soul once again.
Nathan’s friend, Max comes to help Carrie save Cyrus and an unlikely ally plays a crucial role with a little witchcraft. Carrie, Nathan, and Cyrus all must face their personal demons and no one will escape unscathed.
Possession changes perspectives between Carrie and Cyrus during the book which can be a little confusing. The best part of the book is the change that Cyrus goes through during his captivity. His transformation from a brutal monster to a human is fascinating. The relationships between the characters are complicated and layered in ways that many authors don’t bother with. I think after reading book three (Ashes to Ashes)that the events of this book become much more clear and less scattered. Overall, I think it was a very decent follow up to book one, The Turning.

This is by far the best book in her series. The love affair between Mouse and Cyrus was enthralling. I was shocked by my own emotional response when reading the part when Carrie chloroformed him and Mouse was lost. On a side note, why must she keep killing Cyrus? He’d better be back in the fourth book.
