The Review:
Spoilers below. Sorry I can’t help it since it has everything to do with why I didn’t enjoy the book…
The story is somewhat simplistic. I feel like it should start with, “once upon a time…”. The characters for the most part seem very one dimensional. Their feelings and personality are all on the surface with no depth to them. The good people are good and the bad people are bad with no layers in between. The bad guys are easily vanquished and everyone lives happily ever after wrapped up with a neat little bow.
Relating to the characters is difficult because their motivation for doing what they do isn’t logical. It’s hard to believe that Cara wouldn’t have questioned her parent’s bizarre behavior at some point in her life. Kids are pretty inquisitive. Even if she accepted her life as normal, when she went to school and interacted with friends you’d think she’d start to get a clue that something was wrong.
Vince also seems like a dim bulb with his rationale that if he just leaves town everything will be okay. And, he doesn’t just do it once, but twice. He’d rather be separated from Cara forever rather than give her a chance to accept him and have a future together. It seems pretty likely that she would considering her parents are vampires. I suppose there has to be some conflict in the romance for it to seem like they’ve overcome something to be together. That part could have been left out however since there was enough conflict with the vampire/human pairing.
