Review by Vicky London

Warning: Pretty much any detail of Eclipse could be considered a spoiler if you haven’t read it.

Eclipse is the third book in Stephenie Meyer’s young adult vampire series. High school graduation is looming for Isabella Swan and it can’t come soon enough. Not only will she be done with school but Edward has promised to make her a vampire. Bella will gain a new family but lose her old one and the future is bittersweet.

Bella has a bit more to worry about than your average 18 year old. She is still being hunted by the vampire Victoria who wants revenge. She blames Bella for the death of her mate. The Volturi want her heart to stop beating in one way or another and to top things off, Bella finds herself playing peacemaker between the vampires and werewolves.

Things are never peaceful for long in this coastal town. A seemingly unrelated rash of murders in Seattle portends danger for Bella and the Cullen family. Enemies become allies when a vampire army comes to Forks and Bella will do everything she can to make sure those she loves are safe. Bella will also be confronted with life-changing choices; regardless of what she decides, someone’s heart will be broken.

The Review:

Another excellent book from Stephenie Meyer. This one didn’t have quite as much intensity as the first two but she can hardly put Bella through the emotional wringer like in New Moon. The action all came towards the end and the results could hardly be in doubt.

The trauma this time all seems to be for Jacob. The relationship between Jacob and Bella seems right and true but it is hard for Bella to reconcile it with her love for Edward. At least there’s hope for Jacob to find his own soul mate with the werewolf imprinting. One of the sadder parts of the book is a conversation between Bella and Jacob, it also appears to be the inspiration for the title…

Eclipse (p. 599)…
Bella: “I used to think of you that way, you know. Like the sun. My personal sun. You balanced out the clouds nicely for me.” He sighed, “The clouds I can handle. But I can’t fight with an eclipse.”

I love that symbolism of Edward being the moon; cold and hard and Jacob being the sun; warm and comforting. Meyers also parallels the characters with Wuthering Heights using highly appropriate and chilling quotes to express how Bella, Edward and Jacob feel about each other.

I’m very interested to see what happens next. It looks like Bella will be a teen bride if Edward has his way. I think it’s clever how Bella has become the aggressor in the relationship. She can be quite stubborn about what she wants, although she manages to talk herself around to the opposite point of view frequently. After reading Eclipse I’m becoming a bigger fan of Jacob and I look forwarding to hearing more of his story including the Quilieute legends that add such depth and dimension to the books.
