Review by Vicky London

Blood is the New Black by Valerie Stivers is the story of Kate McGraw who finds herself working at a fashion magazine run by vampires. Kate has a flair for fashion which seems to run in the blood. Her mother was a famous designer who disappeared several years ago and hasn’t been seen since. Kate’s feelings about fashion are all twisted up with her bitterness over her mother’s abandonment; so she’s put fashion aside and is going to start med school in the fall.

Her aunt Victoria has other plans for her however, and lands Kate an internship at the hottest fashion mag in town, Tasty. Kate reluctantly agrees and steps into a world where her boss and co-workers party all night, sleep all day, and don’t eat. Not unusual for fashion but she starts to notice other weird things including her boss’s very sharp teeth and the cafeteria’s ban on garlic, not to mention the suspicious “beet juice” that everyone seems to be sucking down.

Rumors of “fashion murders” are being whispered about and a blog called Stake Out seems to have connected the dots. These fashionistas really are evil vampires and one of them is out of control. Kate will have to figure out an exit strategy before she becomes a Tasty girl for real.

Blood is the New Black is a clever chick-lit novel with overtones of The Devil Wears Prada and Ugly Betty. The ending isn’t as satisfying as it could be since it seems to be hinting at a series. It would have been better for the book to just end. You can order this book by clicking on the book cover above.
