The Vampire Shrink by Lynda Hilburn is the first book in the Kismet Knight series. Dr. Kismet Knight is a psychologist in Denver. She’s smart, attractive, respected in her field but her life lacks excitement. That is, until a new client introduces her to an underground world of vampires and a gorgeous 800 year old vampire named Devereux. Kismet can’t explain why she feels an instant attraction to him and she’s not falling for his vampire story.
Kismet is forced to believe in the paranormal when two vampires attack her to provoke Devereaux, and in an instant her entire life changes. The trouble keeps coming and when one of her clients is found in her office nearly drained of blood, she is questioned by handsome FBI agent, Alan Stevens. Alan has his own reasons to believe in vampires and quickly becomes someone Kismet can trust. As if her life isn’t exciting enough, Kismet has feelings for both men. That will have to wait however, because Devereux’s enemies have plans for both of them.
The Vampire Shrink is a really good book. It has a quality that reminds me a bit of the early Anita Blake novels. There’s black humor, horror and romance in the story. One of the things I liked about Kismet was that she never seems to really fight her attraction to Devereux and she doesn’t reject his help under the guise of being an independent woman. She also doesn’t refuse to believe even after being presented with overwhelming evidence of the paranormal. I’m excited to find out how the rest of this series will go and I would highly recommend this book.
