Devour by Melina Morel is the story of Pierre de Montfort, the last werewolf of his line and the hunters that will do whatever it takes to destroy him. Werewolf hunters, Catherine Marais and Paul DuJardin have tracked Pierre down in New York City where they hope to bring an end to a vicious family of werewolves who have wreaked destruction and mayhem for centuries. But their prey will not be so easily slain, Pierre will do whatever it takes to survive.
Catherine and Paul both have ulterior motives for visiting New York. For Catherine, it is home to her lover Ian Morgan, a dashing aristocrat who is also a two hundred year old vampire. Paul is hoping resume his courtship of the lovely translator Julie Buchanan, a descendant of Marie-Jeanne, the Countess de Monfort who was infamously murdered by a Monfort werewolf.
Devour is a confusing book in a couple of ways. It’s billed as a romance but is more urban fantasy. If it is a romance, it is unclear who the story is supposed to be about. More time is spent on Paul and Julie even though the cover blurb would lead you to believe it’s supposed to be about Catherine and Ian. You don’t get a sense of either relationship and their progression because parts of the story are glossed over and told through the character’s memory in a sentence or two. Telling rather than showing left me feeling detached from the characters. I’m not sure if this is a new series, the ending left it open to continue. If it is, I would like to see more or the story about the vampire Ian Morgan who seems to be a more compelling character.
