Review by Vicky London

Dark Possession is the 18th book in the incredibly long running Carpathian series by Christine Feehan. MaryAnn is a counselor for battered women in Seattle. She travels to South American to counsel a young woman who has been brutalized and finds herself caught in a trap. She has been lured there by Manolito De La Cruz, a Carpathian dangerously close to turning into a vampire. At a holiday gathering of his people, Manolito discovered that his long awaited lifemate is MaryAnn. She doesn’t know she is the key to saving his life and before he has a chance to claim her, he is nearly killed trying to protect the prince’s pregnant wife.

In the sensual heat of the South American jungle, MaryAnn will discover some frightening truths about herself. Not only will she learn about her past but experience the possibility of a future with a seductive, irresistible man who will demand everything and challenge her to confront who she really is.

My complaint with past Carpathian books has always been their similarity to each other. Even though the location and circumstances change with each book, the characters seemed incredibly similar, especially the men. It seems like they all have to spout the same lines. Dark Possession finally takes the series in a fresh direction. The jaguars are back in the story and Feehan introduces a new mythical species to add into the mix. She also introduces a heroine who is African-American which is a nice change. Overall, it was a pretty good book but still a bit predictable.
