Mortal Touch is the first book in Inanna Arthen’s Vampires of New England series. Regan Calloway has lived in the peaceful New England town of Sheridan, Massachusetts for seven years. Her psychic abilities led to her involvement in a serial killer case and the fallout from it drove her to escape her former life. Her life now is good, she manages a second hand store and has good friends. But she can’t completely escape her reputation. A local psychologist, Dr. Hiram Clauson, asks for her help in investigating a rash of puzzling attacks in the area. Regan decides to help and gains more knowledge than she ever wanted.
Jonathan Vaughn is a writer who recently moved to Sheridan. The locals are curious about the man who is living in an old stone farmhouse that was once used as a hippie commune. He has his own secrets to hide and no one is more interested in them than Regan’s best friend, Veronica. Veronica hasn’t had much luck with men in the past and she asks Regan to “read” Jonathan and find out more about him. What follows when Regan and Jonthan meet will devastate the life both have built in Sheridan. There are those who will stop at nothing to expose Jonathan’s vampire nature and the stage is set for an explosion of violence.
Mortal Touch builds slowly to a swift and exciting end. The visceral violence of the story makes it feel quite personal and in some ways shocking. You can’t help but feel the betrayal and powerlessness the characters experience. It’s very well written. I also enjoyed that the New England area is like another character in the story. Reading about a different place is always fascinating to me. You can order Mortal Touch by clicking on the book cover above.
