The Watcher is the third book in Jeanne C. Stein’s Anna Strong series. Anna Strong thought she was tough as a bounty hunter, now that she has been attacked and turned into a vampire, she’s unstoppable. That makes her a perfect candidate to be a Watcher, an enforcer who keeps tabs on supernatural criminals and eliminates them if needed. Keeping her own animal instincts under control is another matter.
Anna is pushed to the limit trying to find her boyfriend and tangling with a dangerous sorceress. Max, a DEA agent is missing and probably in danger after shutting down a major drug operation run by Rodrigo Martinez. Martinez is somehow involved with a woman wanted by law enforcement who also plans to use her group of witches to raise a vampire munching demon. Anna’s boss doesn’t trust her to stay out of trouble and sends her on a forced vacation. Trouble seems to find Anna anyway when the bad guys converge on her hideout of Beso de la Muerte.
Anna Strong is an aptly named heroine who is smart, savvy, and independent. Her human flaws make her fascinating and someone you want to continue reading about. Stein also continues to slowly build the characters in Anna’s new supernatural world filled with shapeshifters, empaths, witches and demons. The Watcher is definitely a book worth picking up.
