Review by Vicky London

Midnight Awakening is the third book in Lara Adrian’s hot Midnight Breed series.

Elise Chase, a civilian vampire, stalks and kills the human servants of Rouge vampires on the streets of Boston. She is driven to exact revenge against the monsters who killed her son with their drug, Crimson. Elise knows she is only making a small dent in the enemy and is willing to accept the price of painful psychic trauma to keep her promise to her son.

Tegan is a vampire warrior of the Breed. Since losing his breedmate over 500 years ago he has become a loner and a soulless killing machine. He is known in vampire society as the baddest of the bad. He’s the one they call when no one else can help. One night Tegan rescues Elise when he finds her facing down a band of Rouges. He usually has no problem walking away but ignoring the pain of this lovely widow is more than he can bear.

Midnight Awakening is the story of two damaged souls who have dealt with loss in very similar ways. Both seek revenge and risk their lives to get it. Tegan and Elise manage to turn that pain into something useful but it has kept them isolated from others until now. This unlikely couple, a battle-hardened warrior and sheltered widow, teach each other that vulnerability is anything but a weakness when it comes to love.

Lara Adrian advances the story arc of the series in a way that keeps it fresh and interesting. The thread that connects all of the books is well defined and she throws in just enough details about the bad guys to keep the plot moving along. The addition of new characters to The Order are fun to spot as well and it looks like they will have a German member soon…

The Midnight Breed is an excellent series. If you don’t want to take my word for it, Amazon editors voted Midnight Awakening one of the Best Books of 2007. You can order Midnight Awakening or any of Lara Adrian’s books by clicking on the cover above.
