The Second Line by Sheryl Nantus is the story of Jackie St. George, a woman who specializes in corporate espionage and security. Jackie’s client has hired her to spy on Chocofun, a rival candy company, so they can steal the idea and get it to market first. Everything is going well until Jackie is confronted by a vampire on the roof of the building where she’s spying. Janus Rosethorn is working with Chocofun to modify their idea as special blood candy for vamps and he’s not happy that Jackie is aware of his plan.
Luckily Dillon Fletcher, vampire hunter, rescues Jackie and follows her back to her place. Jackie’s not sure she’s buying his story about vampires but she can’t turn away from the disturbing thought of bloody candy. She reluctantly agrees to work with Dillon but they both have no idea what they’re in for and the extent of Janus’s plans.
Sadly, this book did not work for me. From the description of the book (mostly talking about Chocofun) I was expecting a lighter chick-lit type story. The descriptions between lines of dialogue were distracting and Jackie’s speech was at times improbable. Both Jackie and Dillon are not sympathetic or interesting characters. They both live very bleak lives with little hope of improvement. Dillon is an impotent hunter who can’t stop, much less actually kill vampires. Jackie lives in a run down part of Toronto with her cat and has no apparent friends other than a gruff bar owner and a priest. From the ending of this book, my guess is that this is planned to be a series. Well, all I can say is decide for yourself.
