The Accidental Vampire is the seventh book in Lynsay Sand’s Argeneau vampire series. Ever since Elvi Black came back from Mexico a vampire, she has been following the rules of undead life; staying out of the sun, drinking blood, sleeping in a coffin. She’s never met any other vampires and is doing her best to muddle through. Luckily her friends in her small town are very supportive. They’re fascinated by her transformation and have made her sort of the town mascot, even having her bite the boys when they turn 18. Her friends are worried about her love life though and want to help her find a mate for eternity.
Enter Victor Argeneau, an enforcer for the vampire council. He’s been sent to investigate after an personal ad appeared in a Toronto paper for a female seeking a male vamp. Not to mention the rumors in the Toronto club scene about a female vampire living in a small town nearby. Elvi’s already broken the first rule of the council by calling attention to her existence. Victor is willing to teach Elvi what she needs to know, but attempts on her life interrupt his plans. Someone is out to stake her and Victor has to find the culprit before he’ll get his chance to to lay hands on this gorgeous vamp.
Elvi Black has to be one of the dimmest vampires ever. She assumes a lot about her new nature which she got mostly from watching Dracula. At the same time, I felt bad for her because of the role the town had pressed her into, changing her name and expecting her to perform. Despite her ditziness, it was a very enjoyable book that was quite creative. The story was both heartwarming and funny as Elvi discovered more about herself and finds a second chance at love after a life interrupted by tragedy. Elvi truly is an accidental vampire.
