Review by Vicky London

Cimmerian City by Rae Lindley is the first book in the Cimmerian series. Raven Blackheart is a young Native American woman caught up in a war between humans and vampires. Ten years ago her boyfriend was brutally murdered in front of her when they were both attacked by Dracins, a vampire like species created by a pharmaceutical company. Now she has awakened from her decade long coma, a hybrid of vampire and human and unsure of where she belongs.

In a futuristic Los Angeles, Raven is ushered into her new life by the Tech Corporation. They want to use her as an assassin to further their plans and incite a new war between the races. They also have a plan to repopulate a new planet leaving earth to the Dracins and the cesspit of pollution it has become. Raven is not so easily manipulated, however. A man from her past returns to reveal the truth and a new friend will show her how to love again.

This book has some interesting things going for it; a Native American heroine trying to find her past, and an complex futuristic world. Unfortunately it suffers from choppy storytelling that leaves gaping holes and less than complete world building. The shortness of the book seems to be it’s major drawback. Trying to set up a new world and an entire background of a character not to mention plot in in just over 150 pages is a very big challenge. Hopefully the next book, Cimmerian World, will provide greater character development and scenes that are more descriptive.
