Review by Vicky London

Darkling is the third book in the Sisters of the Moon series from Yasmine Galenorn. Menolly D’Artigo used to be an acrobat who was good at getting into places and spying on people. During a mission she slipped up and that was the last mistake she made. The Elwing Blood Clan doesn’t like to be spied upon so their leader, Dredge responded by torturing Menolly and turning her into a vampire.

Menolly and her sisters, Camille-a witch, and Delilah-a werecat, work for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency. The OIA went bust a few months ago with a war that broke out in Otherworld. Most operatives were recalled but the sisters opted to stay Earthside. Now, they are in a race to keep a powerful demon lord named Shadow Wing from invading and taking over Earth and Otherworld. With a few influential allies like the Elfin Queen, the sisters and their group of friends are the only ones standing in the way of Shadow Wing.

Menolly thought her nightmare was over when the attack on her ended. Now the Elwing Blood Clan is back from Otherworld and they’re busy leaving a trail of bodies all over Seattle. It appears that Dredge is to blame and worse, he may be allied with Shadow Wing. The only way to defeat Dredge is for Menolly to face her demons and sever the ties that bind her to her sadistic sire.

Darkling is the story of a woman healing from her brutal attack. Menolly goes through all the emotions that most rape victims experience but she doesn’t let it steal her courage. There are so many things happening in this story that there’s never a dull moment. Galenorn also keeps things interesting with a golden-eyed, blonde shifter who catches Menolly’s eye. The series is improving with each book, and the characters are getting more rounded. The next book in the series, Dragon Wytch, is coming July 2008.
