Review by Vicky London
Midnight Reign is the second book in Chris Marie Green’s Vampire Babylon series. Part two of this noir-mystery-fantasy series delivers quite a punch. Just a warning that there are spoilers ahead. It’s hard to talk about any of this book without revealing the big secret that was hinted at during the last part of Night Rising.
Dawn and her fellow investigators, Kiko and Breisi are still trying their best to find Dawn’s father, Frank. There’s also been a new vampire murder and they have been instructed by Jonah, their boss to find out as much information as possible. Fate has massive changes in store for these three however. Dawn’s friend and budding actress Jacqueline finally reveals to Dawn that she is in fact her mother, Eva Claremont. Shocked but not completely surprised about the revelation, Dawn discovers another secret her long lost mother is keeping. Her dad has been kept captive by Eva and Dawn isn’t sure where his loyalties lie; with his wife who is now a vampire or with his daughter and new love Breisi.
Dawn has some tough choices to make, and no one seems to be giving her the truth. Does she trust her mother who she desperately wants to love but is a vampire, or Jonah who she feels a connection to but he’s kept her in the dark about his mysterious plans related to the vampire underground? Her mother’s obsession with her family leads to a violent tragedy and nothing is as it seems in the glittering light of tinseltown.
Chris Marie Green’s Vampire Babylon books have a wonderful Hollywood noirish feeling to them. The plot is always unpredictable and she doesn’t shy away from violence or death to ramp up the drama. Don’t get too attached to the characters however, because they may be the next one to go. The history of the vampire underground is fleshed out quite a bit more in this book with flash backs of “the master” and his protege’ Sorin. Alternately interesting and shocking, this book will keep you surprised until the very last page.
