Review by Vicky London

Night Child is the first book in Jes Battis’s OSI series. Jes’s series combines two of my favorite things; crime scene TV shows and paranormal books. The OSI is a combination of all the cool stuff from the CSI TV shows mixed with the creepiness of his paranormal Toronto. In this world, the denizens of Toronto, Canada are demons, vampires and mages. Here’s the book blurb:

Tess Corday, Occult Special Investigator for Vancouver’s Mystical Crime Lab, is used to seeing dead vampires. But there’s nothing ordinary about this case. Not the lab results on the cause of death. Not the teenage girl living at the address found in the vamp’s pocket, who may well be in thrall to a demon. And certainly not Lucian Agrado, the necromancer who is liaison to the vampire community. Agrado is supposed to be part of the solution, but Tess suspects he might be part of the problem.

Soon she finds herself in the middle of a paranormal conspiracy that will change her life forever—and possibly end it.

I always find it interesting to experience how a man writes a book from a woman’s perspective and Jes certainly does a good job here. As a young woman, Tess is struggling a bit to find her place in the world and she finally starts taking something seriously when a young teen desperately needs her help. Even though she’s somewhat of a slacker at work she steps up and is willing to make the sacrifice when someone’s life is as stake. Battin’s experience in queer studies also makes him qualified to write a great character in Tess’s close gay friend, Derrick. Their chemistry and banter makes for great interaction between the two. I think this series has the potential to be very good and I’m interested in seeing where he takes it from here.
