Review by Vicky London
Dark Hunger is the second book in Sara Reinke’s vampire series. Tessa Noble-Davenent will do anything to protect her brother Brandon. She runs away from her abusive husband and the cult-like compound they call home to warn Brandon of the Elders on his trail. Not only does she find Brandon but she meets his friend and fellow vampire Rene. The antagonistic relationship Tessa develops with Rene quickly develops into unwanted attraction on both of their parts. Tessa is pregnant and the last thing she is looking for is a romance. Rene feels protective towards Tessa and the feeling continues to grow as they, along with Brandon and his lover Lena, flee across the country to avoid the Elder vampires who are tracking them. But Tessa’s husband isn’t willing to give up what he considers his property. A violent confrontation will lead to an unfathomable act that has the power to destroy a friendship and crush a blossoming love.
I really liked the first book, Dark Thirst, and began this one almost immediately after finishing it. One thing I do really like about the series is that each book is not self contained but a continuation of one longer story. Unfortunately Dark Hunger didn’t work as well for me. It wasn’t clear why the characters were racing across the country running away from the bad guys. All could think was, so what happens when they get to California? Where do they go from there? In addition, I really didn’t like the ending. It was a shocking turn with a cliffhanger like the first book, but a really awful one. I didn’t understand the character’s motivations and I felt like it was something they won’t be able to recover from. I guess I’ll have to wait and see what happens next.

Hi, Vicky,
Thank you so much for reading my book and sharing your thoughts on it! I’m sorry you were disappointed by the ending. I have to admit, even though I had the idea for the ending to “Dark Hunger” in mind before I even began writing it, I debated about whether or not to use it. Without giving any spoilers, I can say that I ultimately decided to go with it because it seemed true to Rene’s character and what was most important to him — namely Tessa and the baby. In my mind, at least, Rene also felt that the other character involved would ultimately be strong enough to overcome even enemies that seem indomitable.
LOL, I’m trying to be vague. It’s really hard!!!
Again, I’m sorry you were disappointed. It was a hard scene for me to write, and I can completely understand.
I’d also like to invite you to a new forum for Brethren Series readers: http://sarareinke.activeboard.com. It includes deleted scenes and an alternate ending for “Dark Hunger” that may shed some light on what happens in the first few hours after the book concludes.
Thanks again for reading my book and sharing your honest opinion!

Hi Sara,
Thanks for being so gracious. I like that you take risks and choose to do something different. I can understand that you are obviously much more vested in your own characters and that it would be hard for you to write that ending. I really do want to see what happens next because I think you’ve got an interesting world taking shape. I’ll definitely be checking out the forum!
