Kitty and the Dead Man’s Hand is Carrie Vaughn’s fifth book in the Kitty Norville series. Kitty and Ben, now the alpha werewolf pair of Denver, are getting married. They decide to skip the pre-nuptial stress of planning a wedding and elope to Las Vegas. Of course, nothing ever goes to plan when supernatural creatures are involved. The first sign of trouble is their hotel is hosting a gun convention (which is basically a convention for werewolf-hating bounty hunters). Second up, Kitty is asked to deliver greetings to the master vampire of Vegas from the master of Denver. Vampires, ever masters of secrets, are definitely keeping some big ones that could endanger both Kitty and Ben. There’s also a glitzy animal show in town featuring shape shifters and their magnetically sexy leader who has his eye on adding Kitty to his show. Last but not least, is a old school magician whose show is way more real than anyone thinks.

The book takes place almost completely in Vegas which was cool because I was in Vegas on business while reading it. It definitely made the book come alive for me; I could just imagine the more fantastical aspects of Vegas being supernaturally based. I’m glad that this book focused more on Ben and Kitty. I’ve always felt like Kitty and Ben’s relationship happened too fast and that they didn’t connect in the way that Kitty did with Cormac. It seemed like Ben was the guy she’s with because he was there and he would do as well as anyone. I hadn’t expected them to get married but their relationship seems more likely now. The hunter characters, Brenda and Evan, were an interesting addition and I hope they will be making an appearance in future books.

Carrie Vaughn doesn’t disappoint. If you like shape shifters mixed in with your vampires you’ll be sure to enjoy Kitty and the Dead Man’s Hand.
