Review by Vicky London
Evil Ways is book two in the Morris and Chastain Investigation series, an interesting and fast paced urban fantasy. If you like Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files, you will really like these books about a paranormal investigator and his white witch partner.
Supernatural investigator Quincey Morris and his partner, Libby Chastain, investigate a series of murders where white witches are being hunted and killed–and Libby may be next on the list. From Iraq to America, a trail of clues is pointing to an eccentric billionare, Walter Grobius, a man fascinated with a devastating evil that can be traced back to biblical times. What’s more, it seems he may well be involved in a sick scheme for white supremacy across the USA, and Morris and Chastain find themselves in their most epic case as they look to prevent the apocalypse from being unleashed. -from the cover of Evil Ways
The publisher has changed the series title from Quincey Morris Investigations to Morris/Chastain Investigations, which I think is a good change that reflects what is happening in the books. Libby is playing a much bigger role and we get to learn more about the white witch. One of the things I really like about the series is the relationship between Quincey and Libby. Recently, Justin was interviewed by Marta Acosta about his series and he explained a bit more about they dynamic between the two:
They respect each other professionally, and they have real affection for each other without it evolving into romance – so far, anyway. There is a certain degree of sexual tension between them, and several readers have asked me if Quincey and Libby are ever going to “kick it up a notch.†All I can say is: keep reading, and find out.
My prediction is that they will become involved since they are already becoming closer. There’s a certain inevitable bond created when characters survive dangerous situations together. There is only a small cameo by a vampire in this book but if you’re like me you probably enjoy other types of dark fantasy. If you’re looking for a thrilling new series with a different perspective, this one will definitely fit the bill.
