Holy cow, I’m amazed that this has actually happened. LKH has been babbling for years on her blog about Anita Blake Vampire Hunter becoming a movie. I think the only reason this is happening is because of the success of HBO’s True Blood and the Twilight books/movies. I think it sucks that they’re gearing this towards men aged 18-34 since LKH’s fan base has always been solidly female.

From Publisher’s Weekly:

Proving that the steady stream of vampire fiction headed to Hollywood shows no signs of abating, Laurell K. Hamilton’s Anita Blake series has been snapped up by the Independent Film Channel in a deal that marks the cable network/film distributor’s first foray into made-for-TV movies. The telefilm, based on Hamilton’s bestselling series about a vampire hunter who “re-animates” the dead in a futuristic St. Louis, is slated to bow in summer 2010. Glen Morgan (X-Files, Final Destination) is serving as executive producer.

The IFC deal was struck by Writers House’s Marrilee Heifertz and, according to Penguin, which publishes Anita Blake, there are currently six million copies in print of Hamilton’s 16-book series, which debuted in 1993 with Guilty Pleasures. (The next Anita Blake book, Skin Trade, will be published by Berkley on June 2.)

Jennifer Caserta, IFC’s executive v-p and general manager, said that IFC is “appealing to its core base of men ages 18-34 who are looking for vampire content. The popularity of the network in this demographic indicates that there is a clear demand for films that delve into provocative topics, and nothing is more classically provocative than vampire lore.”
