Review by Vicky London

Pia’s dream of being married has come true. But her husband is straight out of her nightmares.

Pia Thomason is torn between two Dark Ones and feeling like a fool, considering she doesn’t know where either of them are. Alec was no doubt broken-hearted over finding out that Pia was mated to his best friend, Kristoff. And hubby Kristoff believes she has ties to the group trying to destroy his people.

So Pia goes back to her humdrum Seattle life determined to forget about Kristoff–but fate has other plans. With Alec missing, something truly evil threatening her ghostly charges, and the vampire community hunting both Kristoff and her for crimes they didn’t commit, Pia realizes that if they’re going to be shackled together for better or worse, she may as well start to enjoy it…

Katie MacAlister’s vampire books tend to be hit or miss for me and this latest vampire novel is mostly a miss. Crouching Vampire, Hidden Fang is the latest book in the Dark Ones series. One of the reasons I had a hard time getting into it was because her books seem to be shifting away from being romance-centric and more towards a straight paranormal/urban fantasy. Since this book is presented as a romance, it falls a bit short in that area. I didn’t feel like there was much of a connection or deep feelings between the characters. The destined mate trope common to paranormal romance, seems to take the place of articulating what it is that these two have in common or even love about each other. The story is centered around a couple but their story is split in two with the first part being Zen and the Art of Vampires, and the second part in this book. It’s hard to keep my interest when there is a six month gap in the continuation of the story. Unless the story is really great, and for me it was not.

Another reason this book was a miss for me was that I just didn’t like Pia. She annoyed me greatly with her dense behavior and her conversations with other characters were intensely frustrating to read. But I’m not ready to give up on Katie yet. Her dragon books are fun and well written although she has begun to do the story splitting thing in those books as well.
