Review by Vicky London
Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs is the second book in the Alpha and Omega series. Here’s the cover blurb:
“Anna Latham didn’t know how complicated life could be until she became a werewolf. And until she was mated to Charles Cornick, the son–and enforcer–of Bran, the leader of the North American werewolves, she didn’t know how dangerous it could be, either…
Anna and Charles have just been enlisted to attend a summit to present of Bran’s controversial proposition: that the wolves should finally reveal themselves to humans. But the most feared Alpha in Europe is dead set against the plan–and it seems like someone else might be, too. When Anna is attacked by vampires using pack magic, the kind of power only werewolves should be able to draw on, Charles and Anna must combine their talents to hunt down whoever is behind it all–or risk losing everything…”
I’m a huge fan of Brigg’s Mercy Thompson series and when she started this new one I was really excited about it. Both take place in the same world with characters that cross over. Bran and his other son Samuel are familiar characters in the Mercy series. It’s a total bonus for me because I tend to devour her books in a day or so. I try to pace myself but it never seems to happen and I want to hang out in her world a bit longer. As usual Hunting Ground ended too soon for me.
In Hunting Ground, you get to know more about Anna and Charles and what makes them tick. Charles is the killer all werewolves fear but his mating with Anna reveals a vulnerable side to him that is fascinating. Anna seems to be dealing well with her past trauma and coming more out of her shell. She’s discovering the power of being an Omega wolf and developing into a courageous woman who will stop at nothing to ensure the safety of her mate.
One of the things that really makes this story work is the blending of different supernatural creatures from the fae to vampires to werewolves. Briggs combines creatures of myth with humans of legend and along the way creates an exciting drama.
