Review by Vicky London
Rachel Morgan has fought and hunted vampires, werewolves, banshees, demons, and other supernatural dangers as both witch and bounty hunter—and lived to tell the tale. But she’s never faced off against her own kind . . . until now. Denounced and shunned for dealing with demons and black magic, her best hope is life imprisonment—at worst, a forced lobotomy and genetic slavery. Only her enemies are strong enough to help her win her freedom, but trust comes hard when it hinges on the unscrupulous tycoon Trent Kalamack, the demon Algaliarept, and an ex-boyfriend turned thief.
It takes a witch to catch a witch, but survival bears a heavy price.
Black Magic Sanction is book 8 in Kim Harrison’s very successful Hollow series. Rachel is settling well into her new role as shunned witch and reluctant student to her demon teacher, Al and Rachel appear to have reached a more comfortable setting on their relationship but it’s never a good idea to trust a demon. It will be interesting to see where things go with these two in their odd, quasi-friendship.
I find Harrison’s plots to be wildly complicated but certainly amusing. It seems that even though Rachel finds herself in crazy and dangerous situations she has the tools to get herself out of a disaster. The plot is filled with highs and lows and a loved character comes to the end of their road.
It feels like a new chapter for Rachel in which she finally begins to truly trust her instincts and to take control over her life when everyone around her wants to control or destroy her. Of course, one of those people is usually Trent Kalamack and Harrison gives us some more background on Trent and Rachel’s childhood relationship. This is a series that perpetually keeps me interested and surprised.

What a great next installment of the Rachel Morgan series! We get some interesting tidbits about Al’s character as well as Trent’s and Nick’s. And who wouldn’t love Bis. I want a gargoyle of my own. Harrison knows how to make characters you can love and understand. By far, my favorite series.
