Review by Vicky London
This is the third book in Michele Hauf’s Wicked Games series. It is meant to be able to stand alone however. The other books in the series are The Highway Man and Moon Kissed. Here’s the cover blurb:
An arranged marriage between a werewolf and a vampire.
There will be blood.
She may resist his bite, but she can’t resist his charms…
Werewolf princess Blu Masterson won’t allow her seductive vampire husband to consummate their marriage with his bite, marking her forever. Alone in a secluded estate with her sworn enemy, Blu curses the marriage arranged to bring their rival nations together, especially since Creed Saint-Pierre calls out to her most feral desires.
When Blu uncovers her pack’s secret plot to destroy the vampire nation—and Creed—she is forced to confront her growing feelings for her sexy undead husband. Will she choose the only life she’s ever known or accept his vampire bite?
I wasn’t convinced that Blu and Creed were in love after a few weeks together. Although they had passion for each other, their relationship was missing authenticity for me. Blu was a fairly unsympathetic character for most of the book. It wasn’t until the end where she seemed to mellow out a lot. I understand how the abuse from her father and her pack made her jaded but she just came off as an annoying brat. Both Creed and Blu seemed to easily set aside a lifetime of hatred for their respective species.
There were a few dropped threads in the story. One of those was Blu’s best friend and fairy, Sabrina. For a person who was supposed to be so close to Blu she didn’t seem that concerned for her welfare and it felt like she was going to be part of the story but disappeared quite completely from the book. Speaking of missing characters, it wasn’t clear who exactly was in charge of the vampires and why Creed got off so easily from initially trying to thwart the peace agreement by attacking the wolves. Maybe this is part of the world building established in the other books in the series, but if it’s meant to stand alone a few more paragraphs of explanation would go a long way.
This book really just didn’t grab my attention and keep me interested. I enjoyed Michele’s book Kiss Me Deadly more than I did Her Vampire Husband.
