Charlaine Harris is the author of the Southern Vampire Mysteries series. Sookie is a small town Louisiana girl with a special gift, she can read people’s thoughts. Sounds great in theory but not so great when she gets to hear her dates assessment of her “assets”. As a result she doesn’t date or get out much.
Sookie’s world is one in which vampires have recently revealed their existence. Now that the Japanese have perfected synthetic blood, vampires don’t have to rely on humans as a food source. The werewolves and other were-animals are waiting to see how it goes for the vampires before they come out of the closet as well. Because of Sookie’s gift she finds herself involved in the goings on of the supernatural community.
