Lynn Viehl’s mission is to rescue vampires from “the boudoir of immortality and let them have a life”. The result of that is the Darkyn series. This is vampire series begins with the novel If Angels Burn.
Viehl is an incredibly imaginative writer who skillfully weaves a world of vampires with secrets of the Catholic church. The Kyn, as they call themselves, are stalked by a secret sect called the Brethren. The Brethren are a scary group of warrior priests whose sole purpose is to torture and annihilate the Kyn. The Kyn appear to be a result of a genetic quirk that surfaced in families during the European Black Plague. Most Kyn appeared to have died during the Plague and were buried, only to rise from their graves later resulting in the name of “dark kyn”. But I won’t spoil all the secrets of the series.
